phancy.com rating:
phancy.com notes: I have nothing to recommend about this movie. It's really bad. Unlike previous Screams, this one pulls out every cheap horror trope and uses them completely unironically. Most of the dialogue is expository. People behave stupidly and inconsistantly, depending on what the plot needs. Unecessary characters are introduced, only to be immediately killed. The big reveal is stupid. Motive and means are just asinine. There's nothing in the script to set it up, and it's just dropped at the end as a tedious monologue. Worst of all, it's just really boring. It is 100% phoned in, Sidney.

Genuinely inept in every way, "Scream 7" is far and away the worst of the franchise, a shallow rendering of things that worked better in other films. While director Kevin Williamson and co-writer Guy Busick think they're appealing to fans by "playing the hits," it's all done in such an ugly, boring, craven (but not Craven) manner that those who love this series most of all, including yours truly, are likely to be the most disappointed.

Scream 7's gnarliest casualty is the franchise's dignity
In a certain sense, the clumsy characters and plot of Scream 7 perfectly mirror its notoriously bumbling villain. The same could be said for Spyglass' blunder of axing Barrera from the cast, which eliminated the refreshing edge that focused on a new generation of Ghostface victims and thrust this sequel into its sorry state. The resulting film is empty fan service, content with simply evoking appreciation for the characters that Williamson created 30 years ago instead of doing anything exciting with them.
